octubre 12, 2011 New Bluth is Back!

Luego de una larga ausencia, mucha controversia y especulaciones, por fin regresará la familia Bluth a las pantallas. Tras la cancelación de la comedia en el 2006, fanáticos leales han intentado salvar a la familia Bluth por segunda vez (la primera siendo durante la famosa campaña de “Save the Bluths” en la segunda temporada, la cual logró extender el programa por una temporada más). Por fin los ejecutivos de la serie han llegado a un acuerdo y el programa regresará en el 2013 para unos 9-10 episodios adicionales que serán seguidos por la tan esperada película.

octubre 7, 2011 con Oscar o sin Oscar

Los Academy Awards han determinado que las películas de Puerto Rico ya no serán elegibles para el premio Oscar a de la categoría ‘Best Foreign Language Film Award’. Según la Academia este premio es otorgado a la mejor película hecha fuera de los Estados Unidos y cuyo idioma predominante no sea el inglés. Ahora las películas puertorriqueñas competirán junto a las producciones estadounidense en todas las otras categorías. La situación ocurre luego de que cineastas mexicanos, residiendo en EEUU, alegaran que ellos, al igual que los puertorriqueños, estaban produciendo material en otro idioma, desde un suelo estadounidense.

A raíz de este nuevo cambio han surgido varias controversias entre los cienastas boricuas. Algunos están contentos ante la oportunidad de competir en todas las categorías, pero hay varios disgustados con este nuevo cambio. Al parecer, algunos cineastas del país consideran que las películas nominadas a la cateogría de idioma extranjero son de menor calidad que las estadounidenses, ofreciendo así una mejor oportunidad a nominación para las películas locales. Ciertamente deben de haber otras razones por las cuales algunos cineastas locales prefieran esta categoría a todas las otras (¿prestigio? ¿reto? ¿reconocimiento?), pero la actitud predominante que he observado regresa siempre a la misma conclusión: “si no es en esa categoría, no tenemos oportunidad de ganar un Oscar”.

Ahora les pregunto yo, ¿cuando, en las últimas décadas, se ha producido una película en Puerto Rico merecedora de un Oscar? La calidad de las películas ciertamente ha aumentado en los últimos años, pero seamos sinceros: nuestra industria aún aprende y se perfecciona. Estoy segura de que pronto habrán grandes producciones y películas de alta calidad y cuando las hayan, no importa la categoría ni la política de la Academia, ellas serán reconocidas si verdaderamente lo merecen.

Por mi parte, estoy contentísima del cambio. Ya se acabaron los días donde solo la casa de producción aspiraba el codiciado premio. Ahora escritores, editores, camarógrafos, compositores, actores, vestuaristas y demás departamentos tendrán algo a que aspirar ya que también pueden ser considerado para todas las otras categorías. Además, quizás el cambio sirva para motivar a nuestros cineastas locales a que no hagan una película por ser “la nominación oficial de Puerto Rico”, sino porque quieren hacer un buen producto de calidad, que entretenga su público, que lleve una visión artística, que presente una buena oportunidad de negocio y sobretodo, que cuente una buena historia

Es día de semana… luego de media noche… y en tu televisor sucede un ‘time warp’ y comienzan a dar “All That”…

The 90′s are back!

Por fin Nickelodeon hizo caso a las peticiones de mi generación y ha traido de vuelta todos esos programas que soliamos ver en los 90′s. All That, Kenan & Kel, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Clarissa Explains it All, Are you Afraid of the Dark? y hasta “Stick” están de vuelta los días de semana después de media noche (o por lo menos eso promete la promoción que le dan al nuevo cambio del canal).

La pregunta es… ¿valdrá la pena verlos? Después de todo hemos crecido y la industria nos ha acostumbrado a otro tipo de comedia. ¿Hará falta incluir nuestro ingenuo sentido del humor de los 90′s para poder disfrutar de estos programas como antes?

Un puro rant… compañeros cineastas, no lo cojan personal.

Si yo veo en un poster que diga “A film by Woody Allen”, te aseguro que voy. “A film by Stanley Kubrick”, y estoy en la primera fila (y quizás en la década equivocada). Pero no tienes que ser un Kubrick ni un Allen para estampar tu película con tu nombre. Hay muchos otros cineastas que a través de su carrera han desarollado un estilo particular y creado nombre por si solos, merecedores de esta técnica promocional de “un filme por…”.

Encuentro un poco confuso que con mas frecuencia, sigo viendo cineastas locales empleando esta técnica de “un filme por Fulanito”, cuando probablemnete lo que están tirando es su primer cortometraje. Y aunque fuera su segundo cortometraje, o hasta largometraje, no se que esperan vender con su nombre, mas allá de que sus tías lo vayan a ver.

Personalmente, encuentro esto un insulto al resto del crew. Como sabemos, el cine es un esfuerzo de equipo. Por mas que el director se haya quemado las pestañas y hecho de productor, guionista, maquillista y hecho el café para sus compañeros, la película no fue hecha solo por Fulanito. ¿Entonces, por que venderla así?

A mi entender, el título de “un filme por…” es algo que se debe ganar. Como mencioné anteriormente, es una técnica publicitaria que se usa para atraer al público leal de ese cineasta. Es una garantía de que la película va a tono con el estilo de ese cineasta, quien ya nos lo ha demostrado en ocasiones anteriores en sus otras películas.

Ojalá algún día yo llegue a ese punto de que mis películas sean reconocidas por mi nombre. Que la gente vaya al cine no solo a entretenerse por la trama que promete la película, sino que vaya buscando ver mi estilo y mi manera de contar historias. Pero hasta que ese día llegue, me conformo con mi título de dirección, guionista o lo que fuera… después de todo no es como si quitarle el “un filme por…” fuera a dejar la película en anonimato, para eso existen los créditos.

julio 11, 2011 Review: Midnight in Paris

VI ‘Midnight in Paris‘ y ahora HABLO de ella:

Resumen corto: Gil, un escritor frustrado, visita Paris con su prometida y suegros. Paseando por las calles a la media noche, Gil se monta en un carro desconocido que lo lleva a la década del 1920′s. Durante un periodo de varias noches el escritor comparte con varios artistas y conocidos de la época, cambiando así su perspectiva sobre la vida, la escritura y el amor.

Woody Allen ha regresado. Por muchos años, el carisma de sus películas se debía a ese personaje protagónico que no entendía la vida, las mujeres y le temía a la muerte y que en la mayoría de los casos actuaba el mismo (porque realmente estaba basado en el). Recientemente sus películas carecían de ese personaje (en ‘Whatever Works‘ Larry David se acerca un poco, pero conocedores de este actor notarán que  hizo de él mismo, no una versión del personaje de Allen). Finalmente Allen decidió revivir el personaje y ha hecho excelente desición al castear a Owen Wilson para esto. Wilson trae una nueva perspectiva al personaje de Gil, ya que a pesar de llevar las características principales del personaje clásico de Allen, intercambia el nerviosísmo y la ansiedad, por una calma y confusión muy propia de los papeles recurrentes de este actor. Esperemos que ‘Midnight in Paris‘ sea solo la primera de varias con Wilson.

‘Midnight in Paris‘ no solo vuelve a rescatar al Allen de la pantalla, sino que regresa a un lado de Woody Allen no muy conocido, donde da rienda sueltas a la imaginación y por fin la explicación a todo no es necesaria. Recordarán este estilo en ‘Purple Rose of Cairo‘, donde el mundo de  la protagonista toma un giro inesperado cuando, viendo una película en el cine como por octava vez, el personaje principal decide salir de la pantalla a compartir con ella. En ‘Midnight in Paris‘ en vez de traer la fantasía al personaje, Allen decide llevar el personaje a la fantasía, metiendo a Gil en el mismo medio de los 1920′s en Paris, su época favorita. Sin explicación alguna, Allen nos logra convencer de que Gil realmente estuvo hablando de rinocerontes con Dalí y compartiendo tragos con el volátil y divertido Hemmingway. De hecho, una de las epifanías que Gil tiene en Paris habla sobre el tema; luego de recibir las críticas de su libro de Gertrude Stein, Gil se da cuenta que no ha dejado su imaginación correr libre y esto le motiva a re-escribir los primeros capítulos de su libro. Mientras Gil le cuenta su descrubrimiento a su prometida desinteresada, parece que el mismo Allen nos está hablando y explicando que era hora de ponerse un poco mas imaginativo.

A pesar de no llevar su estilo convencional, Allen si lograr presentar sus temas recurrentes. La muerte, o el miedo a ella, siempre está presente, en este caso, a través del valiente Hemmingway, quien aparentemente pelea con leones en su tiempo libre. Gil le confieza a Hemmingway que nunca ha logrado parar de pensar en la muerte, y este le dice que solo mientras le haga el amor a un ‘great woman’ logrará dejar de pensar en eso (cosa que Gil confieza, nunca ha logrado hacer con su prometida.)

El tema principal también es uno de los preferidos de Allen, la insatisfacción. En este caso lo vemos cuando Gil tiene su epifanía mayor, en el salón de Moulin Rouge con la ‘lovely Adriana’. Luego de que Adriana también lograra brincar tiempos, ella decide quedarse en la Belle Epoque, cosa que le resulta chocante a Gil porque a pesar de sus frecuentes escapadas a otra década, nunca consideró quedarse por siempre. Gil, amante de la nostalgia, entonces comprende que nadie nunca estará satifecho con su presente, siempre mirando atrás a mejores tiempos. Al igual que en ‘Purple Rose of Cairo‘, vemos que el protagonista por fin realiza su situación cuando el personaje ficticio que lo acompaña se identifica con él e intenta seguir sus pasos.

Hablando un poco sobre el aspecto técnico de la película, el valor de producción de ‘Midnight in Paris‘ es uno altísimo y bien cuidado. Con un presupuesto de $30,000,000 para la película, vemos un diseño de producción fantástico, incluyendo varios ‘sets’ peculiares y muy apropiados de la época, así con sus personajes propiamente vestidos y arreglados. La fotografía, aunque un poco ‘estática’ creo que responde muy bien a las necesidades de la historia. El primer montaje de Paris me pareció fantástico y las varias tomas de la cara confundida de Gil, en vez de enseñarte lo que lo confunde, me parecireon genial.

Realmente lo único que puedo criticar de la película es su corta y rápida conclusión. Luego de soportar a la prometida y su familia por tanto rato, nos quedamos un poco insatisfechos cuando rompen en menos de un minuto y acto seguido llega la chica de la tienda de discos, quien ovbiamente iba a ser el ‘final love interest’. Aún así quedé complacida, aunque sé que para muchos debió verse algo apresurado y forzado.

En resumen, gracias Woody Allen, porque volviste a hacer una gran joya y no puedo esperar a volver a verla.

Hace un tiempo varios ‘bloggers’ de cine se dieron la tarea de seleccionar las mejores películas que han salido por cada año de sus vidas. Ahora me toca a mi y este es ‘my life in movies’:

1985- The Breakfast Club, Ran, Purple Rose of Cairo – este año, como sabían que yo nacía, salen 3 película buenísimas. Breakfast Club es un clásico del Brat Pack. Ran re-cuenta mi novela favorita de Shakespear, King Lear, pero con los sexos invertidos y con el estilo de Akira Kurosawa. Purple Rose of Cairo, de Woody Allen, fue la primera película que vi en una clase de cine, quizás por su culpa comenzó todo…

1986- Hannah and Her Sisters- continuando con Woody Allen, esta es probablemente de las mejores que hizo desde que nací.

1987- Full Metal Jacket – del gran Stanley Kubrick, quien hizo famoso al ‘drill sargeant’ que ahora sale en todos los anuncios.

 1988- Cinema Paradiso – una de las favoritas de todos los cineastas porque trata del enamoramiento del cine.

1989- Ghostbusters 2, When Harry Met Sally – Dos exelentes ejemplos de la comedia de los late 80′s early 90′s. Una trayendo un flashback de la niñez, y la otra sentando presedentes para los ‘romcoms’ de los 90′s.

1990- Goodfellas - para mi es la mejor película moderna de mafia. 

1991- Hook - Me encantan todas las películas de Peter Pan pero esta sigue siendo la ‘clásica’.

1992- The Mighty Ducks – We are the champions. Enough said.

1993- Groundhog Day -vería esta película todos los dias. vería esta película todos los dias. vería esta película todos los dias.

 1994- Leon, the Professional – este año tuvo muchas buenas películas pero para mi, Leon se lleva el premio. Honorable nominees: Pulp Fiction, Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump, Natural Born Killers, Little Rascals.

1995- 12 Monkeys, The Usual Suspects – empate porque son demasiado buenas las dos y ambas presentan buenísimos ‘twist endings’.

1996- Matilda – esta película me encanta porque es buena en todos los aspectos; la dirección, la narración, la musica, los actores, todo.

1997- The Fifth Element – Es de esas películas que se debe ver muchas veces y cada vez que la veo me parece mejor.

1998- The Wedding Singer – Esta película cierra muy bien una buena década de romcoms. Creo que es la mejor de Adam Sandler y la música está genial.

1999- The Virgin Suicides - la primera película de Sofia Coppola dirigiendo (GAD se quitó de actuar) y es buenísima, promete una buan carrera como directora.

2000- Memento/Requiem for a Dream: Con el nuevo millenio, un nuevo tipo de película. Las dos son innovadoras, pertubantes y únicas en su clase. Memento es alrevés, y Requiem … es fuerte.

2001-Royal Tenebaums, Amelie: Amelie porque es única en su clase, y Royal Tenebaums porque es de las mejores del director Wes Anderson, quien admiro por sus buenos guiones, personajes, escenarios y excelente dirección.

2002- Ciudad de Dios – excelente retrato de la situación socio-económica de las favelas de Brasil, con un estilo moderno y divertido.

2003- Oldboy - de las películas mas memorables que he visto.

2004- Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou/Eternal Sunshine- un buen año para dos de mis directores contemporaneos favoritos,Wes Anderson y Michele Gondry, ambas películas son buenísimas y las vería todos los días.

2005- Grizzly Man – mi documental favorito, compuesto por Werner Herzog. Recopila el pietaje y entrevistas de los últimos años de un activista que protege a manadas de osos en parques de Alaska.

 2006- Volver – Pedro Almodovar at his best. Peneolpe Cruz at her best.

2007- No Country for Old Men/Juno – la mejor película de los Cohen bros (seguida por supuesto, por the Big Lebowski) y un ejemplo de como hacer una buenísima película de un tema que a nadie le interesa (teenage pregnancy).

2008- Let the Right One In – película que llega desde Norway a presentar una nueva versión de los vampiros ‘amigables’.

2009-Inglorious Basterds – Quentin Tarantino, a pesar de haber hecho otras películas ‘cool’ no me vino a convencer que era un buen director hasta ver la primera escena de esta película, genial.

2010- ? todavía no he visto suficientes películas de este año como para poder determinar.

2011-Midnight in Paris – todavía no ha terminado el año pero encuentro muy dificil que una película me guste mas que esta. Great, great movie.

¡Por fin! Las bolsas de correo para Puerto Rico se ponen mas livianas con la llegada de Netflix Streaming a la isla.

Netflix, por años, ha sido el método de alquiler de videos de preferencias de muchos por su gran variedad de películas y series de televisión a un bajo costo ($7.99 al mes). Ahora, su nuevo ‘streaming feature’ permite que veamos las películas directamente en nuestro televisor, sin tener que pasar la molestía de estar esperando que te lleguen las películas por correo.

¿Cómo lo pongo?

Super fácil, solo necesitas tener una cuenta en Netlifx y conectar una consola de juegos a tu televisor y accesar el internet através de las varias aplicaciones de ‘compra’ que tiene cada uno. Aquí una lista de los aparatos que cualifican y a donde debes ir con cada uno:

  •  Xbox 360 (Video Marketplace)
  • Wii (Wii Shop)
  • PS3 (What’s New)
  • iPad/iPhone (App Store)
Y…  ¿qué será del futuro de las pocas tiendas de video que quedan?

Ya sabemos que Blockbuster va en mal camino y a Video Ave. no le queda mucho. Si sacas los cálculos, te sale muchisísimo mas barato quedándote en tu casa y viendo cuantas películas quieras en vez de salir a la tienda de videos, a ver si tienen la película que quieres, para tener que pagar casi la mitad de lo que pagas por películas ilimitadas, para que cuando vulevas a devolver la película te cobren mas del doble del alquiler en los fastidiosos recargos (que en ocaciones son hasta por errores de los mismos empleados).

Yo hoy digo, no mas ‘video stores’. Darwin habló y ya veremos como Netflix prevalecerá como la especie predominante dentro de este mercado de alquiler de películas.

¿Sobrevivientes? Redbox y máquinas similares que son mucho más baratas que los videos regulares ($1-$2) y mucho más accesibles.

Desde hace algún tiempo circula por ahí un listado de películas que hay que ver ‘antes de morir’. Apesar de tener título tan tétrico, la lista recoje las películas mas sobresalientes desde el principio del cine hasta la actualidad. Y cuando digo sobresaliente me refiero a películas que hayan establecido nuevos parámetros en el cine; desde un ‘Breathless’ (que es toda una joya del cine) hasta un ‘Clueless’ (donde su valor de producción no es nada que envidiar pero definitivamente dejó su marca).

 La lista comenzó en el 2003 con el libro titulado “1001 movie you must see before you die”, fue editado por Steven JaySchneider y cuenta con las contribuciones de Adrian Martin, Jonathan Rosenbaum, Richard Pena, David Stratton, and Margaret Pomeranz. En los últimos años se han realizado varias revisiones, incluyendo películas contemporáneas y finalmente se ha extendido a 1079 títulos.

Si te atreves, lee la lista y cuenta cuantas has visto. No te sientas mal de tener poquitas, ya lo calculé y se tarda alrededor de 1,500 horas o 63 días corridos para poder ver todas. Yo, que estudié esto, saqué 346/1079 (osea 32%).
